Vegetable-tanned leather

Vegetable-tanned leather - what is it?
In leather processing, a distinction is made between chemical and natural tanning methods. The widespread chromium tanning process is used in 85% of global leather production, meaning that in most cases, leather is no longer a natural material. This type of tanning produces environmentally harmful substances such as heavy metals, which are released into waterways and the environment both during production and subsequent disposal. These substances can be hazardous not only to the environment but also to human health. Nevertheless, most producers prefer chemical processes. This is primarily because they are faster and more resource-efficient.
We strive to minimize our environmental impact through the production of our products and therefore use only vegetable-tanned leather whenever possible. This means our leather is tanned without harmful chemicals such as chromium. Besides the reduced environmental impact, this has another advantage: the gentler tanning process results in a longer lifespan for vegetable-tanned leather than for chrome-tanned leather. Over time, the leather will age beautifully, and your Madras Carry bag or basket will be a cherished companion for many years to come.
